이 책은 쿠바 최초의 여성 드러머 밀로 카스트로 잘다리아가의 이야기입니다. 1930년대 쿠바에서는 ‘여자는 드럼을 칠 수 없다’는 관습이 있었어요. 하지만 밀로는 드러머의 꿈을 키우며, 사람들 몰래 자기만의 리듬을 두드렸어요. 밀로의 재능을 알아본 언니들과 아빠의 도움을 받아 끊임없이 연습했지요. 마침내 드러머의 꿈을 이룬 밀로는 전 세계로 공연을 다니며 실력을 인정받았습니다. 꿈을 향한 열정과 노력으로 사회의 차별에 맞선 여성 뮤지션의 이야기를 만나 보세요.
음악은 서로 언어와 문화가 달라도 공감하게 만드는 힘이 있습니다. 특히 누구든 연주자나 감상자가 되어 언제 어디서든 즐길 수 있는 것이 음악의 가장 큰 매력이지요. 하지만 80여 년 전만 해도 쿠바에서는 여자가 드럼을 칠 수도 배울 수도 없었어요. 1930년대 쿠바에 사는 소녀, 밀로 카스트로 잘다리아가는 드럼 연주하는 걸 좋아했습니다. 사람들 앞에서 드럼을 연주하는 것이 꿈이었지만, 마음속으로만 간직해야 했지요.
드럼 연주에 대한 열망으로 가득 찬 밀로에게 세상 모든 소리는 음악처럼 느껴졌어요. 앵무새 날개 퍼덕이는 소리, 딱따구리 나무 찧는 소리, 아이의 발걸음 소리…. 길을 걷다가도 여기저기서 들려오는 다양한 음악 소리에 밀로는 더욱더 나만의 리듬을 두드리고 싶었지요. 집에서 탁자와 의자를 악기 삼아 두드려 보기도 하고, 남몰래 콩가 드럼과 봉고 드럼을 치기도 했어요. 이 모습을 본 언니들은 자신들의 밴드에서 함께 연주하자고 하지요. 하지만 ‘남자만 드럼을 칠 수 있다’는 관습 때문에 여전히 자유롭게 드럼을 두드리지 못했어요. 그래도 밀로는 언젠가 기회가 왔을 때 멋진 드럼 연주를 보여주기 위해 열심히 연습했어요.
마침내 밀로는 아빠가 소개해준 드럼 선생님의 제안으로 사람들로 가득 찬 카페에서 당당히 드럼을 연주했습니다. 밀로의 연주를 들은 사람들은 누구나 드럼을 연주할 수 있어야 한다고 생각을 바꾸었지요. 그리고 사회의 차별에 맞선 밀로의 용기 있는 행동은 여자라는 이유만으로 꿈을 잃어버린 사람들에게 희망을 보여주었습니다.
