1995년 Caldecott상을 받은 작품입니다. 화가 Paul O. Zelinsky는 80년대와 90년대에 모두 4차례에 걸쳐 Caldecott상을 수상한 현대 아동그림책의 대표적인 작가입니다.
미국 테네시의 산골마을에서 태어난 Swamp Angel은 어려서부터 키가 크고 힘이 센 거인입니다. 산골마을에 사납고 커다란 곰이 나타나서 횡포를 부리자 사냥꾼들이 나서지만 모두 실패합니다. 결국 Swamp Angel이 마을사람들을 위해 커다란 곰과 여러날에 걸쳐 결투를 하지요.
