First published in 1953 and subsequently awarded a Caldecott Honor, this oversized picture book feels curiously modern. The memoir is simple—a white farm cat named Green Eyes is born in the spring, and readers follow him through his first year. Toddlers, for whom everything is new, will connect immediately with this small white kitten and his year of firsts—his success, after many attempts, to climb over the walls of his big red box, his first glimpse of other animals, his carefree summer days playing in the grass, his autumn days chasing leaves, his first taste of snow, and the pleasure he takes in looking out the window from his perch atop a living room chair. Abe Birnbaum, a longtime illustrator for The New Yorker, receives a passing mention in Barbara Bader's American Picture books from Noah's Ark to the Beast Within as one of a group of New Yorker artists who came into the children's book field in the 1950s and 1960s, bringing with them a view of childhood that contrasted with the prevailing sentimentality. In this book, Birnbaum captures the sense of wonder involved in being alive in this world, a world still uncomplicated if you are a cat or a toddler.
