알 속에서 아기새가 꿈틀거리자 엄마새는 아기새가 알을 깨고 나올 때가 된 것을 알고는 먹이를 구하러 갔어요. 그 사이 알을 깨고 나온 아기새는 엄마를 찾으러 둥지 밖으로 나갔지요. 아기새는 고양이와 암탉과 개와 소에게 "Are you my mother?"하고 물어보지만 모두 엄마가 아니라고 하지요. 그러다 커다란 굴삭기를 만났어요. 아기새는 굴삭기에게도 "Are you my mother?"라고 물었지만 굴삭기는 대답 대신 아기새를 번쩍 들어올려서는 안전하게 둥지 위에 내려 놓았습니다. 그 때 엄마새가 맛있는 먹이를 물고 돌아왔어요. 아기새는 엄마새를 보는 순간 물어볼 필요도 없이 바로 자기 엄마라는 것을 알 수 있었죠.
쉽고 단순한 문장이 반복해서 나오기 때문에 어린 아이들이 재미있게 읽을 수 있는 그림책입니다.
