주인공으로 고릴라가 자주 등장하는 Anthony Browne의 대표작중 하나입니다.
공원에 간 네 사람(부유하고 완고한 부인과 그녀의 우울한 아들, 가난하고 슬픈 아저씨와 그의 딸)이 동일한 장소, 동일한 사건에 대해 각기 다른 시각으로 이야기를 합니다.
- 부인의 눈에 비친 공원 풍경은 가을입니다. 완고하고 메마른 감정을 지니고 있는 그녀에게는 모든 것이 못마땅합니다. 공원의 나무들도 우는 모습이군요.
- 실직한 남자의 눈에 비치는 공원풍경은 겨울입니다. 공원 벤치에서 열심히 신문을 뒤지며 일자리를 찾아보지만 헛수고이지요. 하지만 집으로 돌아오는 길에 딸의 신이난 목소리를 듣자 세상의 모든 것이 아름답게 환해지지요. 멀리 빌딩의 불빛도 하트모양입니다.
- 항상 우울한 소년(부인의 아들) 눈에 비친 공원풍경은 봄입니다. 공원에서 처음 만난 소녀와 즐겁게 함께 놀다보니 온세상이 환하게 꽃으로 덮여 있는 것 같습니다.
- 항상 씩씩하고 활달한 소녀(실직자의 딸)의 눈에 비친 공원의 모습은 여름입니다. 잘난체 하는 것 같은 부잣집 소년을 만났지만 함께 놀다보니 서로 친금감을 느낄 수 있었어요. 헤어질 때 소년은 예쁜 꽃을 꺽어서 주었어요.
Anthony Browne의 작품은 공통적으로 배경 그림에 무수한 재미거리를 숨겨 놓습니다만, 이 책은 재미에 더하여 독자로 하여금 무엇인가 깊게 생각할 수 있는 여운을 함께 감추어 놓고 있습니다. 읽으면 읽을수록 새로운 느낌을 갖게 하는, 언젠가 이 책도 어린이 그림책의 명작 반열에 올라설 것 같은 느낌을 갖게하는 예사롭지 않은 그림책입니다.

Four voices in four seasons in a city park, each one is an ape in human clothing: a rich, uptight woman in the fall; a sad, unemployed man in the winter; the woman's lonely boy in the spring; the man's joyful daughter, Smudge, in the summer. Each in turn tells of a brief encounter with the others when they meet in the park with their dogs. Each one sees the place and the others differently; even the type font for each section is different, yet together the voices tell a story. As always, Browne's paintings extend the narrative with almost surreal details that could almost be true. In fall, the boy is overwhelmed by his domineering mom and sits obediently on the bench, except for a few snatched moments when he meets with Smudge in the distance; as his mom drags him away, an autumn tree is in flames like a lamp. In summer, he and Smudge play together and laugh in the light. There is no neat ending--the boy must return to his sad home--but everyone will recognize how a brief encounter with a stranger can give you a glimpse of possibilities. Kids who look closely will discover intense and playful details: a cross-hatched picture shows the boy shut in at home; in the park a classical statue scratches her neck and dangles her sunglasses.
