미국에서 뉴베리상과 Caldecott Medal을 모두 받은 저명한 아동문학작가인 William Steig가 글을 쓰고 영국에서 Kate Greenaway상을 수상한 Quentin Blake가 그림을 그린 재미있는 그림책입니다.
지루함을 견디지 못한 마녀 Wizzil은 파리로 변신해서 이웃마을에 사는 Frimp가족이 사는 곳으로 날아갔어요. 그리고 낮잠을 자고 있는 Dewitt씨의 얼굴을 간지럽혔죠. 파리 잡는 것을 거의 유일한 취미로 여기는 Dewitt씨에게 파리로 변신한 마녀 위질은 좋은 사냥감이었죠. 무지막지하게 휘두른 드윗씨의 파리채에 하마터면 생을 마감할뻔한 마녀 위질은 복수를 다짐합니다. 그리고는 드윗씨의 눈에 띄도록 초록색 장갑으로 변신합니다. 뜻밖의 횡재를 했다고 생각하는 드윗씨... 하지만 장갑으로 변신한 마녀 위질의 장난으로 드윗씨의 파리채는 엉뚱한 곳을 겨냥하고... 결국 파리 한마리를 잡으려다 집안은 온통 난장판이 되어 버립니다. 뿐만 아니라 마녀 위질은 드윗씨의 아들부부에게까지 짓궂은 장난을 치고... 이 모든 것이 재수없는 장갑 때문이라고 생각한 드윗씨는 장갑을 연못에 던져버립니다. 태어나서 수십년간 목욕이라고는 한 번도 한 적이 없는 마녀 위질은 물을 끔찍히 싫어합니다. 물로 던진 장갑이 사람으로 변하더니 물속에서 허우적대는 것을 본 드윗씨는 용감하게 물속으로 뛰어들어 마녀 위질을 구해줍니다. 물에서 끌려 나오면서 수십년 묵은 때를 말끔히 벗겨버린 마녀 위질, 그리고 홀아비 드윗씨는 엉뚱하게도 서로 한 눈에 반해버리고 맙니다...

Oh, what a world! Wizzil the witch is bored stiff. Is there nothing to do? "Go make somebody suffer," her parrot, Beatrice, squawks. Suddenly inspired, Wizzil turns herself into a housefly and zisses off to plague her neighbor, retired farmer DeWitt Frimp, who happens to hate flies. When Wizzil takes a stroll on the snoozing farmer's face, he reacts badly, nearly squashing the daylights out of her with his swatter. The witch takes this personally, and after some serious scheming comes up with a doozy of an idea for revenge: she turns herself into a left-handed work glove, which so captivates DeWitt that he takes to wearing it all the time. The trouble is, whenever he tries to swat a fly, Wizzil spoils his aim. The frustrated farmer finally flings the glove into the river--with unforeseen consequences. Steig has written a rollicking story so awash with alliteration and exuberant language that reading it aloud will be sheer delight. And Blake, recently named Children's Laureate of the United Kingdom, is a wizard with a scribbly line and a color wash. His illustrations, which are every bit as wonderfully energetic and funny as Steig's text (his picture of DeWitt swishing his swatter like a berserk semaphore is priceless), add texture to the story with their telling use of comic detail: a jar of eyeballs, a seriously dead frog in an ashtray, chicken feet hanging from the ceiling. Like Wizzil, readers need never be bored again.

Wizzil, a witch, is bored stiff. So, with some coaxing from Beatrice, her parrot, she turns herself into a common housefly and heads over to Frimp farm to stir up trouble. Little does she know, DeWitt Frimp absolutely hates all breeds of fly, especially Musca domestica, and Wizzil narrowly escapes a life-threatening swatting. Wasting no time at all, she cooks up a nasty plan to teach DeWitt a lesson: she turns herself into a glove, which DeWitt finds and proudly wears, but which also deprives him of the ability to aim his flyswatter. Steig's playful storytelling voice is in full gear in his latest tale, and Quentin Blakes hilarious, antic pictures are a perfect match for the text.
