Book Description
A whole day's worth of kisses, from a good-morning kiss to a good-night kiss, are shown in this special book. Open up the double flaps on each page to see just how many kisses you can collect in one day, a grandma, a puppy, and even a squigglyworm kiss! This is the perfect book to snuggle and share with your little one. And, of course, end it with a kiss!
Publishers Weekly
A baby bear surveys smooching styles in What Kind of Kiss? by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, illus. by Hiroe Nakata: "What kind of kiss do you like, Mama?/ What kind of kiss do you like?" says the cub. "A good-morning kiss," seems to be the mother's simple reply, until the double fold-out page reveals, in addition, "a rise-and-shine kiss,/ a kiss-to-start-the-day kiss." The format repeats throughout until mother and father bear turn the tables. Nakata's tender illustrations make clever use of the expanding horizontal space.
School Library Journal
This adorable book illustrates what a cub's parents, grandma, puppy, and bird need during the day-special kisses from him. First the little bear asks his Mama, "What kind of kiss do you like-?" She answers him in a page that folds out twice, "A good-morning kiss, a rise-and-shine kiss, a kiss-to-start-the-day kiss." The same happens with each character he asks throughout the story; then, at the close of day, the little bear describes his favorite kisses, including "a sweet-dreams, sleep-tight, till-tomorrow kiss." The simple watercolor illustrations of the bear's cozy surroundings and his loving family reinforce the text of this excellent read-aloud.
Kirkus Reviews
Osculation is the name of the game in this cheerful little tale packed full of love. From sunrise to sunset, a tot explores his family's favorite form of smooching. Mama favors good morning kisses to start the day while Papa enjoys kisses redolent of shaving cream and juice, just enough to last the entire day. Even the family dog and a friendly bird are petitioned for their preferred form of salutes, involving wet noses and wriggly worms. The simple story concludes with a medley of the little one's most beloved expressions of affection. Nakata's (The Garden That We Grew, p. 802, etc.) bright artwork combined with the playful layout of the pages is integral to the overall appeal. Double flaps ingeniously expand the illustrations-each turn of the flap whimsically depicts a favorite type of kiss, ultimately unfolding to reveal an oversized illustration. Rendered in a bright palette of colors, Nakata features inviting scenes of a merry little bear and his loving family. A warm and cozy depiction of the contented bliss of a well-loved child.
