Browne's pictures have an attractive looseness that make them ideal for toddlers; he has simplified his style without undermining it. In Books the chimp appears in clothing inspired by storybook heroes; and in Things the lead character is surrounded by friends and activities. The outlook in each--positive and upbeat--sends a clear message, encouraging the overlapping events of imaginative play, real activities and reading.
Children's Literature
This is a colorful and delightful story of all the types of books one could possibly like. It's definitely in the easy reader category. The illustrations are cheerful and feature Browne's chimpanzee character. Even though it is a short story, there are several opportunities for the reader to point out extra features on each page such as shadows or what stories the character is representing or what type of dinosaur is in the book. The book could be very helpful to new readers as the pictures do help identify the words and the word, book, could easily be identified by the end of the last page. The author is a popular children's writer and illustrator with many books to his credit. This would be a welcome addition to the preschool library of a favorite child. It is also a super sturdy picture book that would stand up to rough treatment by the very young child.
