Hush-a -bye, baby, upon the tree top,
When the wind blows the cradle will rock;
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
And down will com baby, cradle and all.

STARRED REVIEW, Publishers Weekly
"Long explains that she saw no point in creating a new Mother Goose collection 'unless I could find ways to make it unique.' She fulfills her mission in various ways: she includes a number of lesser known rhymes[she] conjures up winsome animal characters...[she] links the rhymes inventively..."

"With glowing colors and exquisitely inked detail, Long populates her gathering of Mother Goose rhymes with a cast of characters...there's a plenitude of visual jokes...to compel dazzled youngsters...The page design is varied to avoid visual monotony...Several lesser-known rhymes are included...[an] uncommonly inviting collection"
San Francisco Chronicle
"It's a visual feast with cleverly connected page designs serving up kinder and gentler re-interpretations of many old favorites." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Selma G. Lanes, Parents' Choice, 2000
A great deal of intelligent thinking on the artist's part has gone into this handsome 109-page compendium of Mother Goose rhymes. There are many old favorites as well as a fair share of lesser-known but mostly rewarding verses. Illustrator Long makes imaginative graphic leaps, juxtaposing individual rhymes on double-page spreads so that, together, they make surprising and fresh narrative connections. When this works, the results are delightful, but several joinings seem forced and distract us from each verse's singular charm. This collection is clearly a labor of love, and the artist's accomplished watercolors reward close attention. It is a volume that will have well-thumbed pages and many a request for bedtime rereading.
