From Book News, Inc.
An eye-dazzling, big (10x12.5") popular book that could be improved only by addition of a bibliography to lead those captured by this introduction into deeper study.
Book Description
Thousands of astronomy terms are defined with full-color photos and illustrations in logical groups, easy to understand with related information. A great book for browsing or for reference if the comprehensive index is used. Glossary, index, charts.
Children's Literature
This dictionary allows independently inquisitive reader/browsers or report-bent students to name what they only recognize by sight and to see what they only know by name, for every pictured detail is labeled and the index contains more than 3,000 entries.
Science Books & Films
This brief pictorial dictionary takes a cursory look at modern astronomy. It is a curious mix of astronomical minutiae (e.g., the average orbital speed of Mars is 15 miles/second) and omissions. . . . The color illustrations arethe book's chief asset. The lunar map, however, is less than adequate: Whilethe ray system of Copernicus is shown, that of Tycho, the most prominent crater on the Moon, is missing. Better star maps are found in popular astronomy magazines than are presented here. . . . While young readers may enjoy the artwork, the editors have attempted too broad and shallow a coverage of a vast subject.
