In his first board-book format, Kevin Henkes brings the star of Sheila Rae, the Brave back in Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick. Here, the familiar theme of sibling rivalry surfaces between the heroine and her younger sister, Louise. As one might suspect, Sheila Rae meets her comeuppance, and in the end, all is well.
Booklist
In this story about Sheila Rae and her younger sister, Louise, Henkes provides a somewhat longer text than is usual for a board book. But it's a beautifully told story, and it reflects an honest childhood experience. Sheila Rae taunts Louise with her peppermint stick, not wanting to share it, and uses her experience to trick her sibling. Henkes allows his characters to work out their confrontation without adult intervention: Louise eventually gets some of the candy, and Sheila Rae gets her comeuppance in a very satisfying ending. Henkes' pleasing spot illustrations pop out from their white backgrounds on one page, with text appearing on the opposite page on pastel-colored backgrounds. Best of all, is the ending, showing Sheila Rae and Louise sealing the book with a hug and a kiss. It's sibling rivalry in a nutshell.
