이 책은 작가 피터시스가 자라났던 체코슬로바키아의 영웅 젠 웰즐이 25세때 손에 땀을 쥐게하는 북극여행을 떠나서 겪은 이야기를 그렸습니다.
1893년 유럽중부의 어려운 경제난속에서 한 젊은이가 일상에서의 탈출을 결심,마차와 그 외 여행에 필요한 것들을 사가지고 북극으로의 여행을 떠납니다. 얼어붙은 베링해를 지나 눈썰매를 타고 끝없이 계속되는 눈과 얼음속을 지나며 자유를 느끼던중.. 바위굴을 발견하여 그곳에 보금자리를 만들어 살며 에스키모를 만나길 기원합니다. 그러던 중 어느날 근처에서 뭔가 반짝이는 것을 발견, 금인 줄 알고 다가갔다가 자기석인 그것에 온몸이 꺼꾸로 된채 붙어버려서, 몸이 꽁꽁 얼어가며 죽음의 잠이 들어버립니다. 그러던 중 누군가가 구해줍니다. 의식이 들어 보니, 이뉴잇 같은 에스키모인들이었습니다. 그들은 젠을 친절하게 보살펴주고 혹독한 추위속에서 사는 여러가지 삶의 방식을 알려주었고 젠은 문명의 여러가지를 그들에게 가르쳐줍니다. 그렇게 자연친화적으로 살아가던중 금을 찾으러 엄청난 무리들이 몰려왔습니다. 에스키모인들은 낯선사람들에게 너무 두려움을 갖질 않았으므로, 그들이 행여 다칠세라, 젠은 아이디어를 내서, 스스로 금을 찾는 무리들을 자기석으로 안내합니다.
