Book Description
When day is done, it is time for Grandfather Twilight to close his book, put on his jacket, and go for a walk through the forest. All the woodland creatures watch in silence as he performs his very special evening task and returns to his house among the trees. With its soft glowing illustrations and poetic text, the Grandfather Twilight is perfect for cuddling up with at bedtime.
Synopsis
Each evening Grandfather Twilight opens a chest, removes a pearl from a long string, and calls his dog for an evening stroll. As he walks, the sunset flows behind him like a beautiful robe, while in his hand the pearl grows larger. When he reaches the sea, he releases the pearl to the sky where it shines on the water below. Gentle and lulling, this book captures those serene moments that happen at twilight.
NewYork Times Book Review
Far from the extended captions typical of most picture books, Barbara Bergers words in this illustrated bedtime story have been selected with such devotion that they stand, like a hymn, on their own. Like a hymn, her words also speak to young and old, and yet the words merely hint at the richness of this artists evensong. Her full-color paintings tell the story just as beautifully, and in greater, more original detail. Since the soft-edged acrylics are reproduced in the book at their true size, none of the detail has been lost.
Here indeed is a reassuring path through bedtime terrors into sleep. It is Barbara Bergers first venture; this reader hopes it will not be her last.
Children's Literature
The natural change of day into night is given a mystical treatment in this board book. Twilight is that time when the sky reflects the last soft rays of the sun and the surrounded woods and land becomes darker and indistinct. It is Grandfather Twilight who takes a pearl from his treasure chest and as it grows in size, he releases it in the sky where it becomes the moon. His job done, Grandfather Twilight retires for the night, just like little ones should. The allegory may be well beyond the comprehension of the intended listeners, but the soft illustrations and calm, short text will make a soothing read.
