유태인들의 풍습과 문화를 주제로 하는 아름다운 그림책을 만들어온 Patricia Polacco가 증조 할머니때부터 물려져 내려온 퀼트를 이용해서 자신의 가족사와 미국에 사는 유태인들의 풍습을 들려줍니다.
이 책의 저자인 Patricia의 증조모 안나는 러시아에서 미국으로 이민을 온 유태인입니다. 어려서 이민을 온 안나는 집안이 넉넉하지 않아서 바부슈카라고 불리우는 머리에 덮어쓰는 스카프와 초록색 옷과 늘 입고 다녔습니다. 하지만 안나가 점점 성장하면서 옷이 맞지 않게 되자 안나의 엄마는 안나에게 새옷을 만들어 주고, 대신에 안나가 입고다니던 초록색 옷과 빨간색 바부슈카, 그리고 친척들이 입다 버린 옷가지들을 모아서 커다란 퀼트를 만들었습니다. 이 퀼트에는 예쁜 동물들과 식물들의 그림이 수놓아 졌고, 둘레에는 안나의 바부슈카 천를 이용해서 멋진 테두리 장식을 만들었습니다.
이후 이 퀼트는 안나 가족의 식탁보로 쓰이기도 하고, 안나가 남편인 사샤(작가의 증조 할아버지)와 사귈 때, 야외 피크닉 보로도 이용되었습니다. 그리고 결혼식 때는 차양으로, 새로운 아기가 태어날 때는 아기를 감싸는 보자기로, 그리고 안나가 늙어서 의자에 앉아 지낼 때는 무릎덮개로, 안나가 세상을 떠날 때는 마지막으로 덮고 있었던 이불로 사용되었지요.
이 퀼트는 그후 할머니와 엄마에게 물려진 후, 현재는 작가가 결혼할 때 차양으로, 그리고 딸을 낳았을 때 보자기로 사용했습니다. 오랜 대를 이어 물려져 내려온 아름다운 퀼트는 작가의 딸이 결혼을 하게 되면 역시 조상들이 사용했던 것과 같이 소중한 일에 사용될 것입니다.
미국에 사는 유태인들의 풍습과 따뜻한 가족애를 잔잔하게 표현한 책입니다. 특히 작가 특유의 세밀한 흑백의 목탄화 위에 퀼트 만을 화려한 컬러 색상으로 그린 아름다운 그림은 감상할 만한 가치가 있습니다.

Polacco's first-person voice moves her narrative forward gracefully from the time when her Great-Gramma Anna came to America during the last century to the present. Richly detailed charcoal drawings fill the pages of this beautifully conceived book. Particularly striking are the faces of the Russian Jewish immigrant families who people the pages. The only color used is in the babushka and dress of Great-Gramma Anna, which become part of a brightly hued quilt. Following that quilt through four generations is the basis of this account. Customs and fashions change, but family is constant, visually linked by the "keeping quilt.'' Children will be fascinated by the various uses to which the quilt is put, although some of those uses make one wonder how its "like-new'' shape was maintained. That stretch of the imagination is gentle, however, and does not mar the story. Readers who notice that the author and the narrator share the same name may realize that this lovely story is true; that should make it even more appealing.

Useful for the sense of history it presents to young viewers (especially in discussions of geneaology), this tale also carries a warm message on the meaning of family...
