[ 책 소개 ]
이 책의 저자인 박소영씨는 2세때 미국으로 이민을 간 한국계 미국인입니다. 저자의 경험을 바탕으로, 한국에 남아있는 할머니를 그리워하는 소년의 이야기를 정감 넘치는 따뜻한 내용의 글과 그림으로 보여줍니다.
한국에 살고 계시는 할머니로부터 주노에게 편지가 왔습니다. 주노는 한글을 읽지 못하기 때문에 부모님이 할머니의 편지를 읽고 그 내용을 주노에게 들려줬습니다만, 엄마와 아빠가 바쁜 것 같아서 주노가 편지를 뜯어 봤습니다. 봉투 안에는 한글로 적힌 편지지와 고양이를 안고 있는 할머니의 사진, 그리고 예쁜 드라이 플라워가 들어 있었습니다. 주노는 비록 한글로 된 편지는 읽을 수 없었습니다만, 할머니에게 새 고양이가 생겼다는 것, 그리고 드라이 플라워는 할머니가 정원에서 직접 기른 꽃으로 만들었다는 것을 알 수 있었지요. 할머니는 고양이의 이름을 주노라고 지었다네요.
학교에서 할머니의 편지와 꽃을 선생님과 친구들에게 보여준 주노는 자신도 할머니에게 편지를 써야 겠다고 생각했습니다. 할머니가 영어를 모르기 때문에 주노는 글로 된 편지 대신에 그림을 그려서 보내기로 합니다. 집 앞에 서있는 엄마와 아빠의 모습, 뒤뜰의 커다란 나무가지에 매달아 놓은 그네와 그 밑에 있는 강아지 샘의 모습, 그리고 밤하늘을 날아가는 비행기 아래에 있는 자신의 모습 등 총 3장의 그림편지를 커다란 나뭇잎과 함께 할머니에게 보냈습니다.
그리고 어느날, 할머니가 보낸 답장이 도착하고, 그 봉투 안에는 새끼를 낳은 고양이 모습이 찍힌 사진과 색연필 한 다스, 그리고 조그만 비행기 장남감이 들어 잇었습니다. 주노는 사진을 보고 고양이가 암컷이므로 주노라는 이름 대신 다른 이름이 필요하다고 생각했습니다. 그리고 색연필들을 보낸 이유는 앞으로도 계속해서 그림 편지를 주고 받자는 의미이며, 장난감 비행기는 언젠가 할머니가 비행기를 타고 미국으로 오실 거라는 의미를 지니고 있다고 생각합니다....

This debut book from a talented pair tells a simple but moving story about communicating across distances that are not just geographical but linguistic. Juno can't read a letter sent by his Korean grandmother, but he deduces what she is trying to say from her enclosures: a photo of a cat and a dried flower. He sends her a reply: instead of writing in English, he mails her the biggest leaf from the "swinging tree" in his yard and some drawings, including one of him watching an airplane and hoping his grandmother will come to visit. When Juno receives his grandmother's return letter, he finds a box of colored pencils to encourage more "letters" and a toy airplane that lets him know she will soon arrive. Pak's story is economically told and sensitively focused through Juno's eyes. The tight construction is beautifully complemented by Hartung's blotted oil paint glazes in compositions that are both well designed and touching. Children not yet ready to read on their own (and their far-off grandparents) will find this book especially useful.
