화려한 수상경력에서 알 수 있듯이 1980년대를 대표하는 아동문학작품입니다. 작가 Katherine Paterson은 "The Great Gilly Hopkins"와 "Bridge to Terabithia"로 뉴베리상을 수상한 세계적으로 유명한 아동문학작가입니다.
국내에는 "내가 사랑한 야곱"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 청소년 소설입니다.
미국 동부 체사피크만의 조그만 섬에서 자란 사라는 쌍둥이 동생 캐롤라인의 그늘에 가려서 항상 열등감을 지니고 살아갑니다. 캐롤라인은 더 예쁘고, 더 똑똑하고, 항상 자신감에 넘칩니다. 어려서 부터 어머니의 사랑, 가장 좋은 친구 등 무엇이든 케롤라인에게 빼았기며 살아온 사라는 캐롤라인과 가족에게 보탬이 되기 위해 비린내가 몸에 배고, 손이 거칠어지는 자기희생을 감수하며 게잡이를 하는 속 깊은 소녀입니다.
그러던 어느 날, 젊은 시절에 폭풍이 두려워 돛대를 베어 버린 부끄러움 때문에 섬을 떠났던 월리스 할아버지가 라스 섬으로 돌아오게 되고, 사라와 콜과 월리스 할아버지는 추억과 우정을 차곡차곡 쌓아가게 되면서 사라는 평소엔 느껴본 적 없는 자신이 중심이 된 듯한 기분을 느끼게 됩니다. 그러나 캐롤라인이 ‘고양이 분양’ 사건으로 세명 사이에 끼어들게 되고, 사라는 언제나 그랬듯 캐롤라인에게 콜과 월리스 할아버지를 뺏기게 됩니다. 사라는 다시 한번 열패감에 사로잡힙니다만... 월리스 할아버지와 엄마의 조언에 힘입어, 자신의 불행은 그 누구의 탓도 아님을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그리고 사라는 비로소 캐롤라인의 그늘에서 벗어나, 자신이 원하는 삶을 위해 라스 섬을 떠나 새로운 곳으로 가게 됩니다...
