코끼리 제럴드와 돼지 피기는 절친한 친구사이입니다만, 성격은 대조적입니다. 제럴드는 조심스럽고, 무뚝뚝하며, 근심걱정이 많고, 약간은 비관적인 성격입니다만, 피기는 정반대로 쾌활하고, 항상 싱글벙글하며 낙천적입니다.
돼지 피기와 코끼리 제럴드는 밖에서 놀 생각에 신이 났습니다. 달리고, 깡충거리고, 점프하고... 친구와 밖에서 노는 것은 무엇을 해도 재미있지요.
그런데 찬 물을 끼얹는 일이 발생하네요. 한 줄기, 두 줄기 비가 내리기 시작하더니 곧 폭우로 변해서 주룩주룩... 피기가 실망해서 비를 맞으며 툴툴거리니까, 제럴드는 자신의 귀를 활짝 펼쳐서 피기의 우산이 되어 줍니다. 그리고 땅 밖으로 기어나온 지렁이들이 비를 맞으며 신나게 노는 것을 보고는, 피기와 제럴드는 빗 속에서도 얼마든지 재미있게 놀 수 있다는 것을 깨닫습니다.
달리고, 뛰고, 점프하고... 피기와 제럴드가 신나게 놀고 있는데 빗줄기가 점점 가늘어지더니 금세 해가 쨍쨍 내리쬐네요. 이번에는 비가 그쳤다고 툴툴거리는 피기를 위해 제럴드는 좋은 계획이 있다고 하네요...

In a refreshing reversal of their usual roles, the often-despondent Gerald proves to be a valuable friend to exuberant Piggie when her own naturally sunny disposition fails her. Fretful about the sudden rain that threatens to ruin an afternoon of running, skipping, and jumping, Piggie declares emphatically that she is "not a happy pig." Poor Gerald patiently weathers the rain and her brief tantrum and, as readers might expect, the pair soon make the most of the situation. Alive with movement and feeling, the illustrations tell the story, setting the tone and adding depth to the simple text. The words themselves are manageable for young readers, and these endearing and distinctly developed characters have great child appeal. With a cameo appearance by the Pigeon on the final endpaper, this is a winning addition to the author's canon.

Gerald the elephant and his friend Piggie are outdoors and ready to play when a drop of rain falls “PLINK!” on Piggie’s head. Watching her high-spirited mood dive precipitously through annoyance toward despair, Gerald extends an ear to shelter her. Soon, though, two ecstatic worms cavorting in the rain inspire them to find happiness in wet-weather play. The characters quickly shifting moods provide plenty of laughs, as well as food for thought, in this amiable entry in the Elephant and Piggie beginning-reader series. Willems again combines simplicity and wit to create a child-pleasing text that works beautifully with the cartoon-style illustrations.
