저명한 Illustrator인 Jon J Muth가 2006년에 Caldecott Honor상을 받은 작품입니다. 책이 처음 출간되었을 때, 센세이션한 반응을 불러 일으키며 무려 41주 동안 뉴욕타임즈의 베스트셀러 자리를 차지하기도 했었습니다.
이 책은 Collector's Edition이라는 이름에 걸맞게 커다란 사이즈(28.5cm x 27.5cm)의 고급스러운 하드커버로 만들어졌으며, 예쁜 케이스 안에 주인공 팬더의 모습이 그려진 포스터와 함께 들어 있습니다.
이 책의 제목에 사용된 Zen(젠)은 불교의 선(禪)에 대한 일본어 발음이며, Zen Shorts는 참선에서 사용하는 선문답과 같은 짧은 이야기들이라는 뜻입니다. 이 책에는 총 3편의 짧고도 심오한 이야기가 수록되어 있습니다.
이야기는 칼(막내), 마이클(형), 에디(누나)의 3남매가 바람에 날려 온 우산을 찾으러 뒤뜰에 나타난 펜더 곰 Stillwater를 만나는 것으로부터 시작됩니다. 스틸워터와 3남매는 우연한 만남을 통해 친구가 됩니다.
Stillwater는 자기 집을 찾아 온 3남매에게 선문답 같은 이야기를 차례로 들려 줍니다. 이 책에 소개된 이야기들은 단순히 쓰여진 문장들을 해석하면서 줄거리만 파악해서는 이 책에 전달하고자 하는 가치를 충분히 얻을 수 없습니다.
참선이라고 하는 것이 "잡념을 떨치고 정신을 통일하여 무아지경에 이르러 진리를 깨달는다"는 의미를 지니고 있듯이, 이야기를 읽고 조용히 명상에 잠겨서 그 속에 숨어 있는 심오한 진리나 이치를 깨닫기 위해 노력한다면 이 책이 얼마나 소중한 내용을 지니고 있는지를 알게 될 것입니다.
- 첫번째 이야기 : 라이 삼촌과 달
다음날 에디는 손수 만든 케익을 들고 펜더곰 스틸워터의 집을 방문합니다. 스틸워터는 케익선물에 대한 답례로 삼촌 라이가 겪은 이야기를 들려 줍니다.
어느날 밤, 무소유의 청빈한 삶을 살고 있는 라이 삼촌의 집에 도둑이 들었습니다. 훔쳐갈 물건이 없는지 뒤지고 있는 도둑을 본 라이 삼촌은 그를 내쫓는 대신에 악수를 하고는 자기 집을 방문한 것을 환영한다는 인사를 건넵니다. 너무 놀란 도둑은 입을 벌리고는 아무말도 못했습니다. 자기집을 방문한 손님을 빈 손으로 돌려 보낸 적이 없었던 라이 삼촌은 도둑에게 줄 것이 아무 것도 없자 자기가 입고 있던 누더기 옷을 벗어줍니다. 누더기 옷을 받은 도둑은 뒤도 돌아보지 않고 어둠 속으로 도망을 갔습니다. 그런데 온 세상을 아름답게 은빛으로 비추는 달 아래 앉아서 라이 삼촌은 도둑에게 기껏 누더기 옷 한 벌만 주고 저 아름다운 달을 줄 수 없었던 것을 안타까워 합니다.
탐욕스럽지만 항상 부족해서 남의 것까지 훔쳐야만 하는 도둑과, 아무것도 가진 것이 없지만 부족한 것이 전혀 없는 라이 삼촌의 대비되는 삶... 훌륭한 화두를 던지는 내용입니다.
- 두번째 이야기 : 새옹지마
팬더곰 스틸워터는 자신의 집에 놀러 온 마이클에게 재미있는 이야기를 들려 줍니다. 우리에게도 널리 알려진 중국 고사 "새옹지마"의 이야기입니다.
자신이 기르던 말이 달아나자 마을 사람들이 위로를 해주지만 농부는 "글쎄요"라고 애매하게 대답합니다. 그런데 며칠 후 달아났던 말이 다른 야생마 두 마리를 데리고 돌아 왔습니다. 마을 사람들이 이게 왠 횡재냐며 축하해 주지만 이번에도 농부는 "글쎄요"라고 애매하게 대답합니다. 다음날 농부의 아들이 야생마를 길들이기 위해 탔다가 말에서 떨어져 다리가 부러지는 사고가 발생하고, 이번에도 농부는 그 것이 꼭 나쁜 일이라고 생각하지는 않습니다. 며칠 후 마을에 군인들이 들이 닥쳐서 젊은이들을 전쟁터로 끌고 갔지만 농부의 아들은 다리가 부러졌기 때문에 화를 피하게 됩니다. 그런데 그 것이 행운일까요? 대답은 "글쎄요"...
돌고 도는 세상의 이치를 다시 한 번 생각케 하는 내용입니다.
- 세번째 이야기 : 무거운 짐
막내 칼이 잔소리를 하는 형에게 화가 나서 씩씩거리며 찾아 오자 스틸워터는 막내와 신나게 물놀이를 함께 해줍니다. 모든 화가 사라진 막내 칼은 스틸워터와 즐거운 시간을 보내지요. 스틸워터는 염치없고 무례한 귀부인과 두명의 스님에 관한 이야기를 해줍니다.
갑자기 내린 비로 길이 온통 진흙탕으로 변하자 가마를 타고 온 젊은 귀부인은 자신의 비단 옷이 더렵혀질까봐 가마에서 내리지를 못하고 가마꾼들에게 호통만 칩니다. 하지만 가마꾼들은 한 손에 무거운 짐을 들고 있어서 도저히 귀부인을 도와줄 수 없는 상황이었습니다. 젊은 스님은 이 귀부인과 가마꾼들을 본체만체 했지만, 노 스님은 재빨리 이 젊은 귀부인을 등에 업고서 진흙탕을 건너게 해줬습니다. 이기적이고 염치없는 귀부인은 노 스님에게 감사하다는 말도 없이 가버렸습니다. 두 스님은 다시 가던 길을 계속 갔습니다. 길을 가는 몇 시간 동안 젊은 스님은 그 염치없고 뻔뻔한 귀부인 때문에 화가 나서 참을 수가 없었습니다. 그리고 노 스님에게 귀부인이 얼마나 무례하고 이기적이었는지를 얘기합니다. 그러나 노 스님의 대답은 "나는 몇 시간 전에 이미 그 귀부인을 (마음에서) 내려 놓았는데 너는 왜 아직 그 여자를 짊어지고 있느냐"
아~! 그래요. 정말 노 스님의 말씀 속에 진리가 있네요. 위에서 막내 칼은 하루 종일 형한테 화가 나 있었지만, 스틸워터와 노는 동안은 모든 것을 잊고 행복했었지요. 정작 귀부인에게 수모를 당했던 노 스님은 모든 번민을 잊고 무념무상이었지만, 젊은 스님은 여러 시간 동안 마음 속에서 미움과 울화로 자기 자신을 괴롭히고 있었지요. 찰나와 같이 짧디 짧은 인생을 사는 동안, 우리는 가족과 친구와 이웃을 미워하고 시기하고 서로에게 화를 내면서 소중한 시간들을 낭비하고 사는 것은 아닌지....
- 책 말미에 수록된 작가의 노트도 꼭 읽어 보세요. 팬더곰의 이름인 Stillwater(잔잔한 물)도 "깨달음의 화두"를 던지네요. 수면에 비치는 달을 보려면 물이 잔잔할수록 달의 참 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 물결이 일렁이면 달의 모습은 찌그러지고 조각나기 마련이지요. 우리의 마음도 이와 같아서 격분하거나 흥분된 상태에서는 세상의 참 모습을 볼 수 없지요...

Beautifully illustrated in two distinct styles, this book introduces readers to a Zen approach to the world, wrapped in a story about three siblings and their new neighbor, a panda. One by one, the children visit Stillwater, enjoying his company and listening to him tell a brief tale that illustrates a Zen principle. Each time, there is a link between the conversation shared by Stillwater and his visitor and the story he tells; it's somewhat tenuous in regard to the two older siblings, quite specific in the case of Karl, the youngest. The tales invite the children to consider the world and their perceptions from a different angle; for Karl, the panda's story gently but pointedly teaches the benefits of forgiveness. Richly toned and nicely detailed watercolors depict the "real world" scenes, while those accompanying the Zen lessons employ black lines and strokes on pastel pages to create an interesting blend of Western realism and more evocative Japanese naturalism. Taken simply as a picture book, Zen Shorts is interesting and visually lovely. As an introduction to Zen, it is a real treat, employing familiar imagery to prod children to approach life and its circumstances in profoundly "un-Western" ways. An author's note discusses the basic concept of Zen and details the sources of Stillwater's stories. Appealing enough for a group read-aloud, but also begging to be shared and discussed by caregiver and child, Zen Shorts is a notable achievement.

Like The Three Questions (2002), Muth's latest is both an accessible, strikingly illustrated story and a thought-provoking meditation. Here he incorporates short Buddhist tales, "Zen Shorts," into a story about three contemporary children. One rainy afternoon, a giant panda appears in the backyard of three siblings. Stillwater, the Panda, introduces himself, and during the next few days, the children separately visit him. Stillwater shares an afternoon of relaxing fun with each child; he also shares Zen stories, which give the children new views about the world and about each other. Very young listeners may not grasp the philosophical underpinnings of Stillwater's tales, but even kids who miss the deeper message will enjoy the spare, gentle story of siblings connecting with one another. Lush, spacious watercolors of charming Stillwater and the open neighborhood will entrance children, as will the dramatic black-and-white pictures of the comical animal characters that illustrated Stillwater's Zen stories. Muth doesn't list sources for the tales, but his author's note offers more commentary about Zen. Stillwater's questions will linger (Can misfortune become good luck? What is the cost of anger?), and the peaceful, uncluttered pictures, like the story itself, will encourage children to dream and fill in their own answers.
