Caldecott 수상작인 The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales을 비롯해서 Science Verse, Math Curse, It's a Book, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs 등 다수의 베스트셀러 그림책의 저자인 Lane Smith의 2012년 Caldecott 수상작품입니다. 국내에는 "할아버지의 이야기 나무"라는 제목의 번역서가 출간되었습니다.
증조할아버지는 돼지, 옥수수, 당근 등과 함께 농장에서 자랐으며, 초등학교에 가는 대신에 집에서 책을 읽으며 공부했고, 중학교 때는 첫 키스를 하고, 고등학교 때는 원예학을 공부하기를 꿈꿨습니다. 하지만 2차 세계대전이 터지는 바람에 군인이 되어 전쟁터에 나가야 했지요. 전쟁 중에 파리에서 미래의 아내를 만났고 전쟁 후에 결혼을 해서 행복하게 살면서 슬하에 많은 자손을 뒀습니다. 그는 훌륭한 정원사였으며 그의 정원에는 그의 삶을 엿볼 수 있는 아름다운 토피어리들이 가득합니다...
각각의 페이지를 넘기면서 토피어리 작품들을 통해 증조할아버지의 인생이 차례차례 보여지며, 마지막 페이지에서 이 책의 화자인 증손자가 할아버지 모습의 토피어리를 만드는 장면까지 이어집니다. 이 책의 화자인 소년은 정원을 거닐면서 증조할아버지가 흘린 물건들을 하나씩 주워 수레에 담으면서 할아버지가 살아온 인생 이야기를 들려줍니다. 증손자가 들려주는 이야기와 그 뒤에 펼쳐지는 당근, 닭, 수두걸린 아이, 사자, 마법사, 소녀, 대포, 웨딩케익, 코끼리 등 갖가지 기발한 모양을 한 토피어리 나무의 모습이 책의 내용과 절묘하게 맞아 떨어집니다.
