20세기초에 동유럽에 살던 9살짜리 유태인 소녀 기텔은 엄마와 함께 더 나은 삶을 위해 미국으로 이민을 가기로 합니다. 하지만 출국장에서 엄마는 눈병 때문에 다른 사람에게 전염될 우려가 있다며 출국을 할 수 없게 되고, 결국 기텔 혼자만 커다란 미국행 배를 타게 되었습니다. 엄마는 기텔과 헤어지기 전에 미국에 사는 친척인 멘델아저씨의 이름과 주소가 적힌 쪽지를 건네주며, 미국에 도착할 때까지 절대 잃어버리지 말고 소중하게 간직하라고 신신당부를 합니다. 기텔은 이 쪽지를 항해하는 내내 손에 쥐고 있거나 몸에 지니고 있었습니다.
마침내 기텔을 태운 배는 자유의 여신상을 지나 미국에 이민오는 사람들이 반드시 거쳐야 하는 엘리스섬에 도착하고, 기텔은 입국심사관에게 엄마가 준 쪽지를 보여줬습니다만, 쪽지에 적혀있어야 할 글자들은 모두 뭉개지고 번져서 알아 볼 수가 없었습니다. 졸지에 낮선 이국땅에서 홀홀단신이 된 기텔은 이제 의지할 사람이 아무도 없는 처지가 되었습니다. 그런데 다행히도 입국장의 직원 중 한명이 유태인이어서 기텔의 말을 이해할 수 있었고, 그는 기텔을 도와주기로 합니다. 그 직원은 기텔의 사진을 찍어서 유태인 신문 1면에 싣고, 기텔의 딱한 사정을 기사화했습니다. 그리고 그 신문을 본 멘델아저씨가 엘리스섬에 와서 신문 기사로 인해 유명해진 기텔을 만나게 되고, 몇개월 후에는 마침내 엄마도 무사히 미국땅을 밟게 됩니다.
