Most of the entries in this lavishly illustrated reference include technically beautiful, but sometimes stilted, color photographs and drawings. At a cursory glance, the volume is quite eye catching. There are excellent multicultural and nonsexist examples of children, such as a boy sewing. . . . The pronunciation is given for some words, . . . but not for others. . . . Frequently, only one definition of a word is given; thus, hatch is defined as a verb, while hold and comb are defined as nouns. . . . Older dictionaries could easily prove more useful than this one. For example, the Macmillan Dictionary for Children gives the multiple use of words when appropriate (e.g., as both verbs and nouns) and is written for upper elementary to junior high school students.
