미국에서 최근들어 큰 인기를 얻고 있는 도리 판타스매고리 시리즈의 두번째 책입니다.
주인공 도리는 상상력이 풍부한 7살 여자아이입니다. 집안에서는 하도 이상한 일을 많이 벌리곤 해서 Rascal(래스컬, 악동이라는 뜻)이라는 다소 심한 별명으로 불리우기도 합니다.
1권에서는 도리가 상상 속에서 창조한 친구인 메리, 너기씨, 고블 그래커 부인 등과 벌이는 재미있는 에피소드가 실려있고,
2권에서는 도리는 상상 속의 친구가 아닌 현실에서의 진짜 친구 로제벨을 사귀는 이야기가 실려 있습니다.
3권인 이 책에서는 학교에서 읽기 수업이 시작되면서 도리가 겪게 되는 이야기가 펼쳐집니다.
새로 사귄 친구인 로제벨 때문에 도리의 학교 생활은 훨씬 좋아졌습니다만, 학교에서 읽기 수업이 시작되면서 도리에게 큰 문제가 생겼습니다. 반의 친구들은 모두 책을 잘 읽을 수 있으며, 심지어 챕터북까지도 잘 읽는 아이들도 있는데, 도리는 아직 아기들이 보는 동물농장책 수준에 머물러 있기 때문입니다.
도리는 상상 속에서 동물농장의 책 속으로 들어가 농장 주인인 너기씨를 만납니다. 그리고 자기가 책을 잘 읽을 수 있게 해주는 마법의 약을 만들어달라고 부탁합니다만, 고블 그래커 부인의 방해로 뜻을 이루지 못합니다. 그리고 부작용으로 (물론 도리의 상상이지만) 책 속의 검은 양이 책 밖으로 나와서 도리를 졸졸 따라 다니는 일이 벌어집니다. 검은 양을 책 안으로 들여보내기 위해서는 도리가 일는 법을 배워야만 해결될 문제입니다. 도리가 책을 잘 읽게 될까요?
