봄바람이 불어와 대지를 따뜻하게 해주면 농부는 호박씨를 뿌립니다. 씨앗은 촉촉한 땅 속에서 뿌리와 싹이 자라기 시작합니다. 씨앗을 뿌린지 약 2주가 지나면 녹색의 새싹이 땅을 뚫고 나오고, 두개의 떡잎이 태양을 향해 펼쳐집니다. 식물이 성장하는데 필요한 양분은 잎에서 광합성 작용을 통해 얻습니다. 조그만 떡잎은 시드는 대신에 커다란 새잎이 생겨나고 줄기는 점점 굵어져서 물과 양분이 이동하는 통로가 됩니다. 기온이 점점 올라가면 농부는 호박밭에서 호박이 필요로 하는 수분을 빼앗는 잡초를 제거합니다. 호박줄기는 키가 크는 것이 아니라 옆으로 넓게 퍼지면서 자라다가, 밝은 오렌지색의 우산 모양을 한 꽃을 피웁니다. 뜨거운 낮 동안은 꽃잎을 닫고 있다가 하고 시원한 밤이 되면 꽃잎을 활짝 열고 벌들을 끌어 들입니다. 벌들은 꽃에서 꿀을 얻는 동안 암술과 수술 사이를 오가면서 수분을 시켜서 마침내 호박 열매가 자라게 됩니다. 꽃잎이 지고 나면, 그 자리에는 조그맣고 딱딱한 호박열매가 생겨납니다. 여름동안 호박은 무럭무럭 자라고, 가을이 되면 색깔이 녹색에서 노란색으로, 그리고 마침내 오렌지색으로 변합니다. 불과 4개월 만에 조그만 호박씨가 커다란 호박열매로 변하게 되는 것이죠. 잘익은 호박은 할로윈데이에 호박귀신 모양의 등이 되기도 하고, 맛있는 호박파이가 되기도 합니다... 책의 말미에는 호박씨 볶음 만드는 법과 식물이 물을 흡수하는 현상을 관찰하는 실험방법이 수록되어 있습니다.
