어느날 오후에 거위들이 모두 기분이 좋아서 큰 소리로 꽥꽥거리자, 언제나 다른 거위들보다 튀고 싶어하는 수지는 거위들이 없는 조용한 곳으로 가고 싶다고 생각합니다. 그리고 혼자서 숲 속으로 들어 갑니다. 숲 속에 들어간 수지는 아무도 없는 조용하고 평화로운 곳에 왔다고 생각했습니다만, 사실은 혼자 있는 것이 아니었습니다. 수지 뒤에는 여우 한 마리가 군침을 흘리며 따라 오고 있었죠. 더 조용한 곳을 찾아 점점 깊은 숲으로 들어 가는 수지 뒤를 여우가 따라가고 있었지만, 그 뒤에는 어느새 늑대 한 마리가 역시 수지와 여우를 잡아 먹을 생각을 하면서 따라가고 있었고, 역시 그 뒤에는 커다란 곰이 수지와 여우와 늑대를 잡아먹을 생각을 하면서 따라가고 있었습니다. 마침내 숲 속이 가장 조용한 곳에 도착했다고 생각한 수지가 너무 기쁜 나머지 하늘을 향해 목을 쑥 빼고는 꽤~액 소리를 지르자, 나무 가지에서 잠을 자던 올빼미가 잠에서 깨어나서 "Whoooooooo!"하고 기분 나쁜 큰 소리로 울었습니다. 올빼미의 기분나쁜 울음소리를 들은 여우와 늑대와 곰은 놀라서 도망가고, 수지는 머리를 숙이고는 귀를 막았습니다. 기분 나쁜 소리를 누가 내는지 찾을 수 없는 수지는 이곳이 혼자서 있기에는 무서운 곳이라고 생각하고는 서둘러서 거위 무리가 있는 집으로 돌아갑니다. 그리고 같은 무리들과 함께 있는 것이 얼마나 좋은지 깨닫게 되지요...

The hapless heroine of Horacek's Silly Suzy Goose (2006) returns in another dramatic story. Frazzled by the honking of her flock, Suzy saunters off into the woods in search of quiet. Not since Beatrix Potter's Jemima Puddleduck and Pat Hutchins' Rosie has such an amiable, oblivious bird taken such a dangerous stroll. Soon followed by a fox, who is soon followed by a wolf, who is soon followed by a bear, the oblivious goose hears only the quiet of the woods. She lets out a happy honk, which sets a rescue in motion. The story reads aloud well, but even better are the mixed-media illustrations, which make very effective use of crayon, paint, and collage elements to create distinctive characters, moods, and settings. In the ominous forest scenes, Hor?ek contrasts the simple, white form of the goose with the complex shadings of trees and beasts in the forest to create a sense of danger and intensity. A satisfying picture book for young children.
