어느날 인도의 수행자는 작고 큼에 관하여 성찰을 하다가 문득 까마귀에게 쫓기는 쥐를 보았습니다. 쥐를 구해준 수행자는 고양이가 쥐를 잡아 먹으려고 다가오자 마법을 부려서 더 크고 사나운 고양이로 쥐를 변신시켜 줍니다. 그리고 개가 덤벼들 때는 더크고 사나운 개로, 호랑이가 덤벼들 때는 더 크고 사나운 호랑이로 변신시켜 주었지요. 마침내 가장 힘세고 사나운 호랑이가 된 생쥐는 옛날 생각은 하지 않은 채, 온 숲을 거드름을 피우고 다녔습니다. 수행자는 호랑이가 된 생쥐에게 옛날의 너의 모습을 생각하면서 좀 겸손하라고 나무랐지만, 이 말에 앙심을 품은 호랑이는 은혜도 잊은 채 수행자를 잡아먹을 생각을 합니다. 하지만 상대방의 마음을 읽을 수 있는 수행자는 호랑이를 다시 원래의 생쥐로 돌려 놓고 숲으로 쫓아 버립니다. 은혜에 대한 감사함과 겸손함의 중요성을 깨닫게 해주는 내용입니다.
갈색, 황색, 적색만을 이용한 Marcia Brown 특유의 판화 그림으로 되어 있습니다.
