브라운은 오프닝에서 대칭적인 수평 구도를 활용하여 그림자를 표현하고, 초록빛 땅과 검은 실루엣으로 표현한 나무와 인물, 가로줄 진 주홍빛 하늘에 강렬한 태양을 담았다. 페이지를 넘기면 색상은 빨강으로 깊어지면서 푸른빛이 등장하고, 빽빽한 밀림의 휘늘어진 검정 실루엣이 화면을 채우며 그림자의 존재를 감춘다. 다시 그림자는 이야기꾼 등 뒤로 슬그머니 기어 올라가, 사람들에게 최면을 거는 이야기꾼의 검은 형상 뒤에서 푸르게 선다. 푸른 하늘에 대비되는 검고 눈먼 형상으로 기괴하고 거미와 같은 손을 죽죽 늘여 뻗기도 한다. 그림자는 눈이 부신, 물결치는 황금빛 들판에서 몸을 웅크린 사냥꾼 뒤에 눈에 띄지 않게 있기도 하고, 흉내 내며 놀리기도 한다. 페이지와 페이지들은 서로 리드미컬하게 짜여 있다. 한 마디로 걸작이다."

About the Author
Marcia Brown is an eminent talent in the children's book world. She has twice won the Caldecott Medal (for Cinderella and Once a Mouse...), and five of her books have been Caldecott Honor books: Stone Soup, Henry -- Fisherman, Dick Whittington and His Cat, Puss in Boots, and The Steadfast Tin Soldier. She was awarded the Regina Medal in 1977 by the Catholic Library Association, and has twice been nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.
