안데르센의 명작동화인 나이팅게일을 아름답고 섬세한 동양화풍의 그림과 함께 감상할 수 있는 책입니다.
이 세상에서 가장 아름다운 정원을 갖고 있는 중국황제는 자신의 정원에 대해 커다란 자부심을 갖고 있었습니다. 하지만 중국을 여행한 외국인이 쓴 책에서 황제의 정원보다도 나이팅게일이라는 새가 부르는 노래를 으뜸이라고 쓴 글을 읽고 황제는 신하들에게 당장 나이팅게일을 데려오라고 명령을 내립니다. 황제의 궁전에 온 나이팅게일은 황제를 위해 최선을 다해 노래를 부르고 황제는 노래 소리에 감명을 받아 눈물을 흘리게 됩니다. 황제는 나이팅게일에게 큰 상을 내리려고 하지만 나이팅게일은 황제의 눈물이 자신에게는 가장 큰 선물이라며 사양을 합니다. 나이팅게일이 황제의 궁전에서 살고 있던 어느날 이웃나라에서 정교하게 만든 인조 나이팅게일을 보내옵니다. 비록 인조 나이팅게일은 정해진 노래들만 불렀지만, 역시 아름다운 노래를 들려주었기 때문에 황제를 비롯한 모든 사람들이 인조 나이팅게일의 노래만 듣게 되었습니다. 아무도 자신을 찾지 않게 되자 나이팅게일은 열려진 창문을 통해 숲으로 날아가 버리고.... 세월이 흘러 인조 나이팅게일은 속의 나사장치들이 닳게 되어 예전 처럼 자주 노래를 들을 수 없게 되고, 오직 1년에 한 번만 태엽을 감아 노래를 들을 수 있었습니다. 병이 들은 황제에게 죽음의 사자가 찾아와서 황제의 지난 과거의 일들을 얘기하고, 사신의 소리를 듣지 않기 위해 황제는 음악을 틀으라고 소리치지만 주위에는 인조 나이팅게일의 태엽을 감아 줄 신하가 아무도 없었습니다. 황제의 죽음이 임박한 순간에 갑자기 창문 밖에서 아름다운 음악소리가 들리기 시작합니다. 황제의 절규를 들은 나이팅게일이 창문 밖에서 나타나서 노래를 부르기 시작한 것이죠. 나이팅게일의 노래에 취한 사신은 한 곡이라도 더 노래를 듣기 위해 나이팅게일의 요구조건들을 들어주게 되고, 나이팅게일은 자신의 노래를 듣고 눈물을 흘린 황제를 살리기 위해....
