모든 생명체는 저마다의 중요한 역할이 있다는 교훈을 주는 내용입니다. 국내에서는 "지렁이 칼의 아주 특별한 질문"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작그림책입니다.
작가 프리드만은 집 뒤뜰의 여러 생명체들을 관찰하면서 각각의 생명들이 지금 무슨 일을 하는지 그리고 왜 하는지 궁금해 하던 중 뒤뜰에서 만난 지렁이, 토끼, 여우, 쥐, 그리고 다람쥐를 보며 이 그림책을 쓰고 그리게 되었다고 합니다.
지렁이 칼은 땅속에 살면서 온갖 걸 보슬보슬한 흙으로 갈아엎으며 날마다 열심히 살아갑니다. 그러던 어느 날, 들쥐가 질문을 했습니다. “왜 그런 일을 하는 거야?” “왜냐고···?”
지렁이는 자신이 왜 지렁이로서의 일을 하는지 대답하지 못했습니다. 그리고 당장 땅을 파는 일을 멈추고 대답을 찾아 떠납니다. 칼은 토끼, 여우, 다람쥐 등 다른 동물들을 만나면서 자신이 왜 지렁이 일을 하는지 물어보지만 대답을 찾지 못합니다. 대신 동물들은 자신들은 어떤 일을 하며 살아가고, 왜 하는지 들려준다. 토끼는 아기들을 돌보는 일을 하고, 여우는 먹이를 위해 사냥하고, 다람쥐는 자신이 잠자는 떡갈나무의 도토리를 심는 일을 한다고 말해줍니다. 칼은 자신만 답을 찾지 못하는 것 같아 슬퍼하는데···.
한편, 지렁이 칼이 땅을 파는 일을 멈추고 답을 찾아 헤매는 사이 땅은 점점 메말라 가고 급기야 쩍쩍 갈라집니다. 그러다 딱정벌레는 건강한 땅에서 잡어먹던 애벌레가 보이지 않자 배고파 흐느낍니다. 칼은 딱정벌레를 보고 문득 자신이 왜 지렁이 일을 하는지 깨닫게 됩니다. 자칫 당연하게 여겼던 작은 변화들이 쌓여 큰 변화를 이루듯, 지렁이 칼이 매일같이 열심히 흙을 갈아엎었기 때문에 우리 주변에 아름다운 꽃도 피고, 식물도 잘 자랄 수 있던 것이고, 그 비옥한 땅 속에서 수많은 생명체들이 건강하게 지낼 수 있었던 것이지요. 큰 깨달음을 얻은 지렁이 칼은 다시 땅을 보슬보슬한 흙으로 갈아엎기 위해 자기 자리로 되돌아갑니다.
이 그림책은 서로 연결되어 상호 작용하는 동식물들의 생태계를 보여 주며 자연의 경이로움을 담아 내면서도, 더 나아가 인생의 의미에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 철학적인 메시지를 녹여냈습니다. 무엇보다 자연과 동식물을 배경으로 한 일러스트는 잔잔한 색감의 수채 물감으로 그려내 편안하고 따뜻한 느낌을 줍니다.

Carl is an earthworm who spends his day tunneling through the soil. When a field mouse asks him why he does what he does, Carl realizes that he does not know-but he is determined to find out. Carl visits with Bear, Rabbit, Fox, and others who are aware of their own purposes, but not Carl's. It takes a tiny ground beetle to enlighten him. Nature-inspired watercolor illustrations are gentle and inviting. The text appears in a simple black font, complementing the artwork. When Carl is busy at his job, the text is white against the brown earth and meanders across the pages, following Carl's tunneling track. Tiny black eyes and communicative postures express the attitudes of Carl and the other animals. But on the last page, when Carl finally learns his raison d'etre, readers also see a hint of his satisfied smile. VERDICT This book is a poignant example of the important contributions of even the smallest creature, but it's better than that-it's a science lesson as well. Freedman subtly explains the delicate balance of nature and each creature's role in maintaining it. Carl is an endearing protagonist.
