폐차장을 운영하는 집에서 태어나고 자란 바이올렛은 어려서부터 또래 여자아이들이 인형이나 소꿉들을 갖고 놀 때, 바이올렛은 렌치같은 공구들을 갖고 놀았으며, 온갖 기계들을 해체하거나 조립하는 것에 큰 흥미를 느꼈습니다. 8살이 되었을 때 바이올렛은 폐차장에 있는 부품들을 조립해서 하늘을 나는 수레를 만들었으며, 이를 시작으로 하늘을 나는 욕조, 하늘을 나는 자전거, 쓰레기통을 활용한 로케트, 스카이콩콩 비행기, 미끄럼틀 글라이더, 그리고 날개를 움직이는 비행기도 만들었습니다. 하지만 학교에서는 다른 아이들과 어울리지 않고 혼자서 엔지니어링 전문서적을 읽거나 기름때가 쪄든 작업복을 입고 다녀서 아이들로부터 놀림을 받았습니다.
그러던 어느날, 2주일 후에 에어쇼가 열린다는 포스터를 보고, 바이올렛은 자신이 만든 비행기가 에어쇼에서 상을 받게 된다면 학교에서 아이들로부터 놀림을 받지 않을 거라고 생각합니다. 그리고 나무통과 나무배를 이용해서 기상천외한 비행기 호넷을 만들었습니다.
그리고 에어쇼가 열리는 날, 바이올렛은 호넷을 조종해서 20분 비행거리에 있는 에어쇼장으로 가던 중에 강물에 빠져 구조를 요청하는 보이스카웃 아이들을 발견합니다. 결국 아이들을 구조해서 병원으로 데려가느라 에어쇼에 참석하지 못하게 된 바이올렛은 집으로 돌아와서 낙담에 빠졌습니다만, 밖에서 시끄러운 소리가 들리기 시작하고...
만드는 것을 좋아하거나 커서 과학자나 공학자가 되는 것을 꿈꾸는 아이들에게 큰 동기 부여를 해줄 수 있는 내용입니다.
