Extra Yarn(2013년)과 Sam & Dave Dig a Hole(2015년), 그리고 This Is Not My Hat 등으로 Caldecott상을 받은 현존 최고의 Illustrator 중 한 명인 존 클라센의 Hat 삼부작 중 하나입니다. 국내에서는 "내 모자 어디 갔을까?"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작 그림책입니다.
이 책은 여느 그림책에서 볼 수 없는 3부 구성으로 이루어져 있습니다. 거북이라는 동물 캐릭터, 사막에서 발견된 하얀 모자라는 물질, 그리고 그 물질에 대한 거북이들의 미묘한 내적 갈등과 욕구는 시간 경과에 따른 섹션 구성 덕분에 더욱 돋보입니다.
1. 모자를 보며- 사막에서 발견한 모자 하나
모자 1, 2편에서는 곰과 큰 물고기가 저마다 자신의 모자들을 찾으러 가는 이야기인 반면, 이번 작품은 어느 누구의 모자도 아닌 모자에 대한 이야기입니다. 단조롭고 밋밋한, 별로 특별할 게 없는 사막에서 발견한 모자는 단박에 두 거북의 시선과 마음을 사로잡습니다. 두 거북은 모자가 누구의 것인지, 어떤 사연으로 그곳에 있는지 궁금해하기보다 자신들에게 어울리는지를 확인하려고 서로 써 봅니다. 하얀 모자가 두 거북의 얼굴을 가릴 만큼 잘 어울리지 않아 보이는데도, 아이러니하게 두 거북은 서로에게 잘 어울린다고 말해 줍니다.
2. 지는 해를 보며- 해가 져도 사라지지 않는 욕망
사막에 해가 지고, 두 거북은 지는 해를 바라보며 밤을 준비합니다. 그림 속에서 두 거북은 모자를 계속 마음에 두는 듯 보이는데, 둘이 대화를 나눌 때에는 모자 따위는 잊은 것처럼 능청스럽게 말합니다. 네모 무늬의 거북이 눈을 감자, 세모 무늬의 거북이 살짝 모자 쪽으로 발을 옮깁니다. 다시 한 번 모자를 써 보고 싶은 세모 무늬의 거북. 컴컴한 어둠 속에서 펼쳐지는 이 거북이의 욕망을 아무도 모르는 듯하나, 작가는 이번에도 독자만은 이야기의 모든 것을 보게끔 연출합니다.
3. 잠을 자며- 내 모자, 네 모자가 아닌 우리의 모자
네모 무늬의 거북은 자신의 꿈을 세모 무늬의 거북에게 들려줍니다. 꿈속에서 너도 있고, 나도 있고, 우리 모두 모자를 쓰고 있다고 말입니다. 그 말에 세모 무늬의 거북은 발길을 멈추고 잠시 모자를 보며 생각합니다. 그리고 이내 네모 무늬의 거북이 곁으로 돌아와 함께 잠을 잡니다. 마치 자신도 같은 꿈을 꿀 것처럼.
