이 책의 저자인 첼시 클린턴은 미국 전 대통령인 빌 클린턴의 외동딸이며, 유명한 사회운동가이자, 뉴욕타임즈 베스트셀러 1위에 오른 "She Persisted"를 지은 작가이기도 합니다. 이 책 역시 첼시 클린턴이 만든 베스트셀러 중 하나이며, 국내에서는 "멸종하게 내버려 두면 안 돼"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되기도 했습니다.
이 책의 앞뒤 표지를 넓게 펼치면, 지구 위를 걷고 있는 10가지 동물이 보입니다. 코끼리, 기린, 코뿔소, 북극곰, 고릴라, 호랑이, 사자, 팬더, 해달, 오랑우탄 등 대부분 우리가 잘 아는 친근한 동물들입니다. 그리고 바닷속에는 엄청난 크기의 대왕고래와 고래상어도 있습니다. 이렇듯 온갖 동물들은 지구의 구성원으로 생태계의 균형을 유지하며 살아갑니다.
그런데, 우리에게 매우 친숙한 이 동물들이 모두 멸종 위기에 처해 있다는 사실을 알게 되면, 큰 충격에 휩싸일 수밖에 없습니다. 희귀 동물과는 달리 우리에게 너무나 익숙하고 흔하게 여겨지는 동물들이라 멸종과는 거리가 멀어 보이기 때문입니다.
책장을 넘기면 더 인상적인 그림을 볼 수 있습니다. 동그란 지구 위에 열두 동물이 마치 균형을 잡고 있는 것처럼 둥글게 지구를 감싸고 있습니다. 이 중에 한 마리라도 사라진다면 지구의 균형이 무너진다고 암시하는 듯한 모습입니다. 그 다음 장으로 넘기면, 세계지도에서 금방이라도 사라질 것만 같은 열두 동물의 실루엣을 볼 수 있습니다. 이는 멸종 위기 동물들이 중대한 위기에 처했음을 알리는 경고의 메시지같이 보입니다.
이렇듯 경각심을 불러일으키는 그림들로 시작되지만 이 책의 본문 그림들은 아주 아늑하고도 사랑스럽습니다. 주로 엄마와 아기 동물이 짝을 이루고 있는데, 예를 들면 지구상에서 가장 큰 동물인 대왕고래 두 마리가 서로 사랑스럽게 바라보고 있습니다. 또한 코뿔소 등에 앉아 늘 단짝으로 지내는 찌르레기처럼 더불어 사는 공생 관계의 동물들도 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 이 그림들은 우리에게 지구 생명 공동체의 현재와 미래를 함께 고민하고, 모두 더불어 살아가자고 호소하고 있음을 저절로 느끼게 됩니다.

Clinton's latest picture book is an ode to 12 animal species in danger of extinction. Those familiar with her past works will recognize the format: a collection of factual blurbs rather than one long narrative. A spread is devoted to each animal, always accompanied by a short explanatory paragraph. The text may be sparse, but there is not one wasted word. Readers will enjoy engaging with fun facts and vocabulary for animal groups (an "embarrassment" of giant pandas or a "crash" of rhinos, for example). In addition to the informational paragraph, bullet points are included for each animal which state its endangerment status, the reason for that status, and its geographic location. Marino's gouache illustrations are accurate yet whimsical and convey the personality of each animal. This book will get a lot of traction as a science or social studies curriculum addition and does not need to be read in order to be useful as a learning tool. It will also be an appealing cover-to-cover read for animal lovers. Useful endnotes include an explanation of the human-made reasons some animals are in danger of disappearing, as well as action items for those who want to do more to save them. VERDICT A sure bet for elementary school libraries.
