이 책은 윌리엄스가 단 16개 단어로 구성된 "The Red Wheelbarrow"라는 시를 쓴 1920년대 미국 동부 뉴저지주의 작은 마을 루더포드로 돌아가서, 그때 그곳의 상황을 재구성함으로써, 어떻게 이 유명한 시가 만들어졌는지를 밝혀봅니다.
미국 유명의대를 졸업하고 본인이 태어난 고향 루더포드로 돌아가서 평생 마을 사람들을 돌보며 살아 온 윌리엄스는 어느날 마샬씨 집을 방문해서 몸이 안좋은 마샬씨의 아들을 돌보다가 우연히 비내리는 창밖을 내다봅니다. 2층 창문에서 보이는 아래쪽 정원에는 마샬씨가 비를 맞으면서 마을사람들에게 팔기 위해 토마토, 양배추, 감자 등을 캐서 외바퀴수레에 싣고 있었습니다.
윌리엄스의 눈에 띈 빨간 외바퀴수레와 하얀 닭들이 윌리엄스의 시상을 떠오르게 했나 봅니다, 윌리엄스는 바로 16개의 단어로 이뤄진 "The Red Wheelbarrow(빨간 외바퀴수레)"라는 시를 써내려갔습니다.
