타이러스의 재능을 알아본 아버지는 큰 돈을 빌려서 타이러스를 로스엔젤레스에 있는 명문 오티스예술학교에 보냈습니다. 타이러스는 여기서 서양미술에 대해서 배웠으며, 아울러 동양화의 수묵화 기법을 더욱 발전시켰습니다. 저녁이 되면 돈을 벌기 위해 학교 청소부로 일했으며, 대걸레로 바닥에 그림을 그리곤 했습니다.
학교를 수석으로 졸업한 후, 디즈니사에 에니메이터로 취직한 타이러스는 디즈니가 새로운 만화영화 "밤비"를 만든다는 소식을 듣고는 좋은 기회가 될 수 있다고 생각했습니다. 여러날 동안 타이러스는 밤비의 배경이 될 산과 숲의 그림을 지금까지 해온 잎사귀 하나까지 정밀하게 그리는 세밀화 기법이 아니라, 수묵화의 물감이 번지는 듯한 수묵화 기법으로 숲과 나무들의 느낌을 전달하는 그림들을 여러장 그렸습니다.
